Work from Home Wisdom in the media in 2014

Work from Home Wisdom in the mediaWow, where has the time gone?

The last week of January and I still haven’t shared my final summary of life on the blog in 2014.

So here’s a round-up of some of the places you could find Work from Home Wisdom in the media last year:

1. Early in the year I contributed this piece on how to make home working work to the small business blog of Hiscox, the specialist insurance company. It covers 4 basic points you need to consider in order to be able to focus on work at home – workspace, a work routine, distractions and dealing with the danger of isolation.

2. My Guardian piece on how pets keep home workers company generated almost 600 social media shares, showing that a photo of snoozing kittens is one of the best ways to attract attention online!

And it inspired a Guardian gallery of home working companions.

3. Self-employment advocate Barbara Winter has contributed some wonderful posts to WfHW so I was glad to reciprocate with Going with the Flow. For me one of the greatest joys of working from home is being able to go with the flow, using your own natural rhythms to work when the time is right, and going off to do other things when you’re just not in the mood.

4. I mentioned a few other points in Master the Mindset of Working from Home for the Citrix Go To Meeting blog. For example, social media is a fab way to connect with other people, but be aware that reading about their successes could make you feel inferior by comparison. Not many people are brave enough to share their failures too!

5. Another article for The Guardian discussed whether freelancers and small business owners should ever work for free. There’s a wide range of views on this contentious question, as shown in this Guardian round-up of responses on Twitter.

If you’d like to see your own home business in the media this year, why not start with a guest post here on Work from Home Wisdom? Or to get in the national press have a look at my post Press coverage for your small business about how I started writing for The Guardian.
