Judy Heminsley
Hi, I’m Judy Heminsley and I can’t imagine a way of life that doesn’t include home working. The funny thing is that working from home was never a plan or ambition of mine – I fell into it by chance when I left my job as a personnel officer to set up a new business in the 80s. But I was instantly converted by my new-found independence and ability to weave together my work and domestic commitments throughout the day.
I ran my cleaning business from my back bedroom for 12 years, employing over 20 staff and organising the cleaning of many beautiful buildings in the Georgian city of Bath. On selling up, I decided to use my accumulated experience and train as an independent business adviser for fellow small businesses, again from a home office.
Later I spent a year working for a funding organisation, based at home and visiting clients at their own premises. No time wasted travelling, just a stroll into my office, a note on the timesheet and I was earning! For the last few years I have also helped my partner Andy Britnell to run his training and coaching practice – from home, naturally.
It seems to me that the world has reached a point of fundamental change in terms of how we live, work and travel, and I see working from home as the way forward for many of our current problems. My book Work from Home was published by How To Books in April 2009.
