Do home workers have bank holidays?
In the UK we’re coming up to another bank holiday, that much-cherished institution from the days when paid holidays were unheard of and most people worked pretty much all the time. Are bank holidays an anachronism now that employees get ample paid leave for holidays and other reasons? As home workers, do you actually observe them at all, treat them as any other weekday, or maybe as a more relaxed day when you can start later and finish early, with a bit of family time thrown in?
A and I usually work on bank holidays in order to avoid the crowds at popular destinations and the traffic clogging the major roads. We enjoy being contrarian and doing things differently to the majority. Why do the same thing at the same time as lots of others when you can take a day off during the week and have a nicer experience?
I’m also wondering whether to do a blog post on a bank holiday or to treat it as an extension of the weekend and not bother. Are there aspects of your usual Monday routine you miss out on a bank holiday or does life go on as normal?

Well, I LOATHE Bank Holidays. Lyme Regis is thick with trippers today. I avoid them like the plague, so in spite of it being a glorious day I am working pretty much as usual and hope to take another day off instead. I don’t feel too bad about working, it fills me with a warm smug feeling actually. Hurrah…the kids are going back to school too so we are going away on holiday next week for 2 weeks. Childfree we hope.

Good to have a rant occasionally, isn’t it, Mrs Grumpy? I hadn’t considered the ramifications of actually living in a bank holiday destination! I don’t blame you for keeping well out of the way and stocking up on home working brownie points for later.

I logged my computer on yesterday and dealt with a few emails and a couple of things that had been on my mind. I was then able to relax and enjoy the rest of the day off with my hubby. Far better to do a couple of little tasks that take minutes than leave them, as you never know what tomorrow will bring!

I think there are positives and negatives with working bank holidays. On the positive side, it can be a great opportunity to get “heads down” with a massive TODO list purge, or tackling one large task that has had to wait, all while you aren’t getting a steady stream of “quick” calls from clients.
On the negative side, family (especially non-immediate) can have expectations that you won’t be working on bank holiday and that can be a source of contention and friction, should family want to drop in on the way to/from their bank holiday destination of choice.

There speaks the voice of experience, methinks! I have been trying to convince relatives for a long time that there’s no such thing as a predictable routine in this household! With two home workers and no children, we go with the flow, which means every day is different and there are no such things as regular mealtimes, working patterns etc. I can see that non-home workers might find such a contrarian way of working hard to understand!

This Homeworker never works on Bank Holidays. I also gave myself yesterday and today off. No point in working on a Bank Holiday doing orders when the Post Office is closed.
