What are the best pets for home workers?
Amongst the recent home workers’ favourite things featured here were a couple of cats and watching birds in the garden. It’s started me thinking what the best pets for home workers are.
I’m a cat person by nature, although I’ve been cat-deprived for a long time now since my elderly tabby and tortoiseshell departed this life. You can tell how long by the fact I wasn’t using a computer when they were around! Sometimes they did like to try and sit on the page I was trying to read or write on, or box the pen as it moved, but generally I found them excellent company. And at least I didn’t have to talk to myself!
I have home working friends who have dogs and find them a great reason to leave work behind for a while and get out of the house. Fine when the weather’s good, but maybe not so appealing in winter. And this morning when I spoke to my publisher her dog decided to join in! But dog walks can be useful as a convenient way of marking the beginning and end of the working day, whereas us dog-less folk might be tempted to carry on into the evening.
But then of course, why not just observe the wildlife outside your window, which provides endless entertainment with absolutely no upkeep?

Guinea pigs are my passion and my business. Making skincare products for guineas is a fantastic “excuse” for having 5 Gorgeous Guineas:)
Guineas have Cavy Slaves to tend to their every need (well the lucky ones do). They are always happy to have a cuddle if I need some stress relief or someone to chat to.

Chrissie, you’ve taught me a new word! For other folk who haven’t come across ‘cavy’ before, my dictionary tells me it’s a ‘short-tailed South American rodent such as the guinea pig’. Which distinguishes it from the hamster, which has also had a home working vote, which is a ‘small Eurasian rodent with very large cheek pouches’.
Oh, and I see guinea pigs like getting into bags as much as cats do!

Sadly I have a “CAVY” number plate on my car but only guinea pig people “get it”!
“Dogs have owners, cats have keepers”. Seriously though, I’d choose a dog, for the reason you mentioned about getting out of the house. Normally I find it’s when I least feel like getting out of the house that I benefit from it most – having an obligation to faithful friend can be a winner here.
