Yes, you did read that right, despite Dolly Parton’s chirpings! It’s the title of the latest book by Emma Jones, the founder of Enterprise Nation, the online resource for setting up and growing a home business. Emma has identified a growing band of people running businesses alongside their jobs, either to guard against possible future [...]

I wrote recently in Unexpected Pleasures about how wonderful it is when something good happens that you haven’t had to work or push for. It’s a salutary reminder that life doesn’t have to be a struggle! I also love it when out of the blue an answer arrives to a question you have been puzzling [...]
Having mentioned my podcast with Freelance Advisor, I mustn’t forget to tell you about their comprehensive and very readable guide to freelancing, Go Freelance, which has just been revised and updated for 2010. It covers everything you’d ever ask about going it alone, from getting started and understanding the legalities, to getting paid – and [...]
Today I need to take some of my own advice, as outlined in my book about working from home in the chapter on productivity, to decide what to work on first. There are so many things I’d like to get done, preferably now, straightaway, this minute, that it’s hard to plump for one and just [...]
The very best thing about my new working from home business is that I am making contact with all sorts of interesting people. Nick Williams, my mentor, recently put me in touch with Adrian Bourne, one of the trio behind
BBC iPlayer is a fab invention. Not only can I catch up with Spooks – completely riveting on a laptop – on the evenings A is out at Ki Aikido, but I can hear the radio programmes I would otherwise miss. I’ve just been listening to You and Yours on Radio 4 about how work [...]

If you’ve visited the site before, you might have noticed I’ve made some changes recently. Some much-needed changes, as I’ve been neglecting the site over the last few months to concentrate on promoting Work from Home. I’m now working on increasing visitor numbers by researching keywords and adding audio and video clips. So that’s why [...]
I first heard about ‘Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty – The Only Networking Book You’ll Ever Need‘ years ago, but it didn’t appear to be in print in the UK and I didn’t follow up on it, partly because I share to some extent the British scepticism of American self-help books, despite having read [...]

This blog seems to be in danger of becoming about books rather than working from home, but I just have to let you know about an opportunity to win a newly-published novel. A local free magazine, The Furball, has 5 signed copies of Pictures of You by Jane Elmor to give away if you know [...]

Haha, I hear ya Judy! I’ve got my own voice ringing in my ears around every 40 minutes when I’m at my computer. My advice too all my clients is to move about regularly to avoid tension building in your body. Standing up while you’re on the phone is a good way of getting some extra movement.
As for the inbox fiasco (ok, a little dramatic) I use the flags. Then every other day I take a peak at the FOLLOW-UP folder in the TAST PANEL(if you’re using outlook). Then I reply to them in order of importance. Some of them still sit there a while, but at least they all show up in one please and you don’t have to sift through all your folders to find them individually.

Thanks for the advice, Leora. I think you must know your way around Outlook much better than I do. I only skim the surface of what’s available and there never seems time to find out what else is lurking there. But I shall refer your comment to my IT Support when he returns and get him to point me in the right direction.
As an aside, I’ve always wondered why some enterprising manufacturer doesn’t make basic appliances for those of us who only ever use 1 or 2 programmes on their washing machine etc. What about a mobile phone that handles phone calls and nothing else? With a manual that’s only 2 pages long? Sounds like bliss to me, especially as the simplicity would be reflected in the price. I’m sure there must be a huge market who don’t want the all-singing, all-dancing versions. Or is it just me?

Are you suggesting you want a computer that only has email
?
What about those thick manuals that are all in different languages. What a waste of paper!!

Yes, the size is so offputting, does anybody ever read them anyway?
