Over the weekend I’ve been reading about Nicholas Carr’s book The Shallows: How the Internet is Changing the Way We Think, Read and Remember. I’m not surprised to learn that the average Briton spends almost half their time looking at a screen (computer, television or phone). As home workers we might spend even more than [...]
Yes, you did read that right, despite Dolly Parton’s chirpings! It’s the title of the latest book by Emma Jones, the founder of Enterprise Nation, the online resource for setting up and growing a home business. Emma has identified a growing band of people running businesses alongside their jobs, either to guard against possible future [...]
Having mentioned my podcast with Freelance Advisor, I mustn’t forget to tell you about their comprehensive and very readable guide to freelancing, Go Freelance, which has just been revised and updated for 2010. It covers everything you’d ever ask about going it alone, from getting started and understanding the legalities, to getting paid – and [...]
The very best thing about my new working from home business is that I am making contact with all sorts of interesting people. Nick Williams, my mentor, recently put me in touch with Adrian Bourne, one of the trio behind
BBC iPlayer is a fab invention. Not only can I catch up with Spooks – completely riveting on a laptop – on the evenings A is out at Ki Aikido, but I can hear the radio programmes I would otherwise miss. I’ve just been listening to You and Yours on Radio 4 about how work [...]
I first heard about ‘Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty – The Only Networking Book You’ll Ever Need‘ years ago, but it didn’t appear to be in print in the UK and I didn’t follow up on it, partly because I share to some extent the British scepticism of American self-help books, despite having read [...]

As a minimalist by nature, I hate it when my inbox contains more emails than I can see all at once – when the dreaded scroll bar appears at the side. Although usually ruthless with the delete key, I like to keep messages there in full view until they have been dealt with, in the [...]

This blog seems to be in danger of becoming about books rather than working from home, but I just have to let you know about an opportunity to win a newly-published novel. A local free magazine, The Furball, has 5 signed copies of Pictures of You by Jane Elmor to give away if you know [...]

If you’ve had a look at the Books for Homeworkers page you’ll already know I like the novels of Linda Grant. I’m presently re-reading her latest book, The Thoughtful Dresser, a non-fiction look at fashion and why it matters. I collected my reserved copy from the library on Friday and read the whole thing during [...]

well done Judy. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
I’m used to this, my publishers sometimes send me a card, never had a launch party paid for by them though.
I hope it becomes a best-seller.
love Marg x

A launch party paid for by my publisher – now that would be nice, wouldn’t it? I don’t think you get those these days unless you happen to write about juvenile wizards. For the rest of us it’s homebaked cakes and lashings of ginger beer. Which happen to be two of my favourite things…
Mums who work from home, don’t forget to click on Marg’s name above in blue. It takes you to her website where you can see some of her gorgeous, colourful illustrations.

I’m adding my congratulations too Judy. Margaret and I are very old (in all senses of the word!) friends and I have followed your progress through her. Be proud – it is really something to have an idea, get it down on paper and have it published. Well done. And, when the book IS finally in the shops, do what Marg does – go into the shops and rearrange the displays so your book is at the front!

Hello, Anne, and thank you. I also need to thank you for putting me in touch with your friend last year when I was doing my research. She came up with some really interesting points. Which are in the book, of course! At the moment I can’t imagine having the nerve to rearrange books, but I expect I’ll learn!
